Why We Chose European Wheels First

Tags: european wheel, history, strategy

The Foundation curriculum of Roulette Community teaches the European wheel first, and the American wheel second. Readers who arrived here from American venues sometimes ask why.

The simplest answer is that the European wheel is mathematically cleaner. It has one zero. The long-run expected return is closer to a round number. The 'first five' combination — which only exists on the American wheel — is a detail best introduced after the core.

A second answer is historical. The European wheel predates the American one by decades. When we teach the history alongside the math, the story is easier to follow if the arc begins in Paris and ends in New Orleans.

A third answer is pedagogical. New players confronted with two zero pockets spend cognitive energy trying to hold them both in mind. One zero is easier to internalize. Once internalized, adding a second is a small step.

None of this is meant as a slight to the American wheel. Many of our editorial board members play American tables exclusively. We simply find that starting European, then adding the American wrinkles, produces confident players faster.

If you have strong feelings about the ordering, the editorial board welcomes your letters. The next curriculum revision will incorporate community feedback.
