The First Table: A Letter to New Players
If you have never sat at a roulette table before, read this first. Everything else waits. The table waits. The dealer waits. And we waited for you too.
There is no need to know every bet the first time you sit. You will learn them. Everyone at the rim once did not know them either. What you need, on that first evening, is a calm posture, a small stack of chips, and an eye on the dealer.
Place a bet you understand. Red or black is a fine place to start. Watch the ball settle into its pocket. Watch the dealer pay out the winning zones and sweep the losing ones. Notice how the rhythm works — how the 'no more bets' lands a few seconds after the ball begins to lose height, how the dealer's hand is already on the marker when the ball drops.
Do not chase losses on your first evening. Do not raise a bet to catch a streak. If you win, tip the dealer something modest and keep your next bet the same size. If you lose, do the same. The aim is not to leave up. The aim is to leave knowing something.
Bring a friend if you can. If you cannot, arrive slightly early and look around. Most tables have a quieter shift at which the regulars are happy to make space. The staff will usually be glad to see a careful newcomer; they work hard to teach, and they rarely get thanked for it.
You will remember your first table longer than you think. Make it a kind memory.
