Inside vs Outside Bets Explained

Two Categories, One Wheel

Roulette bets split into inside bets (placed on specific numbers or small groups) and outside bets (placed on large categories like red/black or odd/even). Both categories have the same house edge, but they produce radically different experiences.

Inside Bets

Straight Up (35:1)

A single number. Highest payout, lowest hit rate (2.7% on European wheel). The defining high-variance bet.

Split (17:1)

Two adjacent numbers on the layout. Place your chip on the line between them. Doubles your win rate versus straight-up.

Street (11:1)

Three numbers in a row (e.g., 1-2-3 or 13-14-15). Chip goes on the outer edge of the row.

Corner / Square (8:1)

Four numbers that form a square on the layout. Chip in the center of the four.

Six Line (5:1)

Two adjacent streets—six numbers total. Chip on the shared outer edge.

Five Number Bet (6:1) — American Only

Covers 0, 00, 1, 2, 3. This is the only bet where the house edge is higher than standard (7.89%). Avoid it.

Outside Bets

Red / Black (1:1)

18 red numbers, 18 black numbers. Zero(s) not included—they're the house's pocket. Nearly 50/50 with a zero.

Odd / Even (1:1)

Same mechanics as red/black. 18 odd, 18 even, zero(s) excluded.

High / Low (1:1)

1–18 (Manque) or 19–36 (Passe). Again nearly 50/50.

Dozens (2:1)

1–12, 13–24, or 25–36. One-third of the layout, pays double.

Columns (2:1)

Each column covers 12 numbers running the length of the layout. Same odds as dozens.

Choosing Your Bet Style

High-variance player (chasing big wins): Straight-up inside bets. You'll have long cold streaks broken by big payouts.

Low-variance player (extended sessions): Outside bets. Red/black and odd/even keep you in action longest relative to your bankroll.

Compromise: Split your action between a modest outside bet and one or two inside number bets. The outside bet sustains your session; the inside bet provides lottery-style upside.

The Same House Edge, Different Experiences

No matter which bet you choose, the casino's mathematical advantage is the same. What you're really choosing is how exciting or smooth you want the ride. Low-variance bets are more consistent; high-variance bets are more thrilling. Neither is more profitable than the other.
