From Home Circle to Chapter: A Model of Community Growth
Roulette communities have historically grown through a pattern of informal home circles becoming formal local chapters. We model this growth using publicly shared membership data from fifteen Roulette Community chapters and derive a simple set of thresholds that predict the transition from informal to formal organization. We discuss the implications for community stewardship.
We examined the publicly shared membership data of fifteen Roulette Community chapters over the period 2023–2024. We observed a remarkably consistent pattern: informal home circles stabilize at between six and ten regular participants, and either dissolve or formalize into neighbourhood groups around the fifteen-member mark.
We propose two thresholds: the ten-member threshold, at which a home circle benefits from introducing loose structure; and the twenty-five-member threshold, at which a neighbourhood group benefits from formal federation with a city chapter.
These thresholds are not rules. They are empirical regularities that community stewards may wish to consider when timing the transition between stages.
