The Wheel and the Table
Understand why the wheel is laid out the way it is, how the betting table mirrors it, and the vocabulary every player should know.
A roulette wheel is a machine designed to produce an unpredictable outcome with perfectly predictable mathematics. The rim carries 37 or 38 numbered pockets. The layout alternates colors and spreads similar numbers across opposite arcs, so the eye cannot guess the outcome from any single region.
The betting table is a translated, two-dimensional map of the rim. Straight-up numbers occupy a 3x12 grid. Outside bets — red, black, even, odd, low, high — sit along the edges. Dozens and columns run alongside the grid. The choreography between dealer, ball, wheel, and players depends on everyone sharing this language.
Beginners often underestimate how much of the experience is social. The wheel is a pivot. Around it stand hosts, regulars, visitors. Learning to read the table means learning to read them too.
