Psychology of Streaks

Why our brains see patterns in randomness, and how to stop spending energy on them.

Humans evolved to detect patterns in noisy environments. The roulette wheel exploits exactly this instinct: every outcome carries the illusion of momentum. Red after red feels like a trend. It is not.

The practiced player knows three things. First, the wheel has no memory. Second, a cognitive decision to ignore streaks is necessary but not sufficient — emotions ignore rational decisions. Third, a small pre-commitment (chip budget, session length, outside-only for the first fifteen minutes) is the most effective buffer.

Key takeaways
  • The wheel has no memory.
  • Cognitive resolve alone is not enough.
  • Small pre-commitments buffer against emotional drift.
